Once you bought something beautiful, you want to wear it as much as possible and keep it beautiful. How you care for your clothes has a huge impact on how long your clothes last and also on the environment. Here are 3 tips for good maintenance for a sustainable wardrobe. Enjoy!
Fresh and clean clothing!
Pour vinegar into the washing machine (about 125 ml of white vinegar). This enhances the power of the detergent, protects against blurring of colors. And sweat and deodorant stains on your clothes will disappear.
Small or full load of laundry easy going just let it spin. Keep in mind that old washing machines (from before 2001) consume 80 liters of water each time. Today it is 43 liters.
Many clothes are made of plastics (such as fleece jackets) or a blend of cotton/polyester. When you machine wash synthetic clothing, tiny plastic fibers go into wastewater after washing. These bits eventually make their way into rivers, lakes and our oceans, where they pose health threats to plants and animals. Consider the ‘Guppy Friend’ meshing laundry bag that filters plastic fibers during washing – available at Patagonia for 20 Euros.
The more often you wash your clothes, the faster they lose their shape and fade.
If you have a small stain on your piece of clothing, you may want to remove it by hand with ‘Savon de Marseilles’ instead of throwing it in the washing machine.
Hang it up on the clothesline!
No matter how easy the dryer is (and don’t forget it takes a huge amount of energy), it’s better for your clothes to hang them up (or lay them down).
It’s softer for your clothes to let them dry in the air. In the fresh air your clothes stay creaseless. So no ironing is needed!
Hang your white clothes outside and dark clothes inside. This will prevent your dark colors from shading.
If your clothes did fade, or your dark jeans are no longer dark? Then wash them with textile paint. Just try it! This way your jeans will be as good as new!
Care for your clothes
Change your clothes every day. Because clothes lose their shape when you wear the same every single day.
Invest in good clothes hangers. Many women use iron hangers. They are very narrow and your clothes will hang loosely. With wide wooden hangers, your clothes will last longer.
Hang one clothing piece per hanger. It’s well organized. And you care for your clothes.
