At Pakhuis de Zwijger, Dutch fashion designer Ronald van der Kemp gave a fascinating presentation. Loved to hear his story behind his clothes.
He used to work for major fashion brands such as Céline, Escada, Guy Laroche and Wolford in New York, Paris and Milan. But he was falling asleep. He didn’t feel inspired any more. And he had enough of the traditional fashion system of more and more collections and faster and faster. And everything looks alike.
He wanted a different kind of fashion. Ronald van der Kemp makes exclusive clothing made from fabric leftovers. He collects or buys those leftovers from various fashion companies. And there are enough beautiful fabrics of good quality that are not used at all. With different pieces of fabric he creates new, high-quality fashion items by hand: “clothing with a soul,” as he calls it.
His items constitute a wardrobe with different looks for different occasions. Not one collection with one theme, like most well-known fashion brands. The clothing from “RvdK” is worn by Kate Moss, Céline Dion, Doutzen Kroes and Inez van Lamsweerde. Minister Kaag wore the ‘red circular dress‘ on a trade mission in India. He shows in Paris. And his work is often seen and discussed in magazines such as Elle, Marie-Claire, Vogue and talkshows like DWDD.
His message is ‘love your clothes!’ Fashion has become a disposable item. A t-shirt costs the same as a cappuccino. Major fashion brands such as Chanel and Hermes burn the many items that are not sold. This must change! Ronald van der Kemp works with a different kind of ethics: buy consciously and appreciate what you are wearing!
