Cleaning out your wardrobe is a tough job. Selecting, organizing and reordering clothing, shoes and jewelry is exhausting and time-consuming. It requires a lot of mental effort. Because you not only organize your wardrobe – you also bring order to your mind. You structure your ideas.
You process the memories and experiences that are associated with your clothing. You associate items of clothing with certain feelings – happy and unpleasant moments. You relive those situations. So it’s understandable that parting with clothing items is a hell of a job.
But when you clean out your closet, you make room for something new. You open yourself up to new experiences and memories. That gives peace, a liberating and happy feeling. The reward for decluttering is a closet full of items you actually want to wear. I have listed 5 styling tips to clean out your wardrobe. Enjoy!
Tip 1 / How much time do you need?
Define your time. Plan how much time you want to take for the job and stick to it. This ensures you make faster decisions whether you want to keep something or give it away. Ready for a complete clean out? In one afternoon you can go from a stuffed closet to an organized one. If you have only one hour to do a clutter sweep just keep it small. Stick to one category such as, all your coats.
Tip 2 / Only clothing that fits your style in your closet
We don’t just wear clothes, we wear memories. In fact, just looking into your closet can trigger a flashback. And remind you of that first job or gala party. We tend to hold on. But if your clothes no longer fit your style, then the time has come to say goodbye. Otherwise you have to keep digging in your closet to find items that make you feel great.
Tip 3/ You don’t have to throw out everything!
Do you have items that are now too small or too big, but which are dear to you? Actually that’s wonderful! You can pass it on to the next generation. A niece might enjoy wearing it. Or have it altered. A good tailor can help you get that perfect fit again. Do you have a woolen jacket that has been damaged by moths? Do something creative with it! For example, put nice appliqués on your coat. Think about a second life for your clothes!
Tip 4 / Know what you have in your wardrobe
Are the drawers in your dresser so full of things that you don’t know what’s inside? Then it’s a good idea to take a look and try the items on. Knowing what you have creates space. The best way to keep a good overview is to hang your clothes. Then you see and recognize everything you have. And it’s easier to choose what you want to wear.
Tip 5 / What message do you want to say about yourself?
An important question when cleaning out your wardrobe is: “do the clothing items in my closet give the look and appearance I want?” Do you still want to be seen in a skirt that’s just too short or too tight? Check if the item of clothing makes you happy when you wear it. If you have decided this for yourself, it will be easier to clean out your wardrobe!
