Museums have re-opened on June 1st. All visitors must reserve a time slot. You can experience these fashion exhibitions in the Netherlands right now!
Fashion on a Ration in the Resistance Museum in Amsterdam until September 6th 2020
There was a growing shortage of textiles during the German occupation. This exhibition shows how fashion changed during the occupation and the creative solutions people came up with to compensate for shortage of fabric. Women were making suits out of second-hand men’s suits, skirts became shorter to save fabric and wedding gowns were made of parachute fabric.
The Hoodie in the New Institute, Rotterdam until August 23rd 2020
This exhibition considers the role of a fashion garment as a socio-political carrier. The hoodie is a staple of contemporary dress, hyped as a trend and a must-have item. But elsewhere it is also a topic of moral panic, banned by certain institutions and dissected by the media as an emblem of inequality, crime or deviancy. While the hoodie provides safety and comfort for some wearers, others will face prejudice and discrimination, preferring the put the hoodie down in public. This inequality can be traced back to the question of who can wear a hoodie without hindrance – the same applies to any type of head or face covering (Covid-19), even if is ‘acceptable’ from a medical point of view.
